In the north-eastern region of Penedès, Ignasi Segui produces a limited selection of honest wines – whites, cavas and natural wines – working with with local Penedès varieties for Cava: Macabeo, Xarel.lo, Parelleda and more recently Garnacha Blanca, Sumoll and Malvasia de Sitges.
The focus is clearly on healthy soil – using the terroir in the most sustainable, natural way possible – and no intervention in the cellar, so that the wines become the clearest possible interpretation of the terroir. Ignasu prefers to produce varietal wines – his philosophy being ‘one vine = one wine’.
This is Vinyes Singulars – a certified organic project started in 2011 though having been in the Segui family since 1405. Much of the 120 hectares of the estate are forested, but is also a fully functional farm consisting of an orchard, olives, almendro trees and vegetables.
Approximately 34 hectares are under vine, of which a good portion of the grapes are sold to the local wineries for their flagship wines in keeping with Ignasi’s goal – to create a small family owned project focussed on quality, not profit – producing no more than 15,000 bottles a year. This low production also allows the wines to reach full maturation in tandem with high acidity.
Ignasu vinifies his wine based on the the results of each vintage. Indigenous fermentation, no fining, filtration and no added sulphites.
For us, this is definitely a recipe for delicious = Organic farming. Low production. Minimal Intervention. High quality.
