Jean-Marc started his eponymous winery with his wife and partner Christine in 1989. He owns all of his vineyards with the majority being in Morgon’s famed Cotes du Py (13ha). The youngest of the vines are 50+ years old. He also owns an even tinier amount of Regnie and Beaujolais Village.
The vineyards have not seen chemicals or non-organic inputs for 10+ years and work is done my hand and horse. Vineyard density exceeds 10,000 plants per hectare.
In the cellar, Jean-Marc uses no adjuncts with the exception of sulphur at bottling. Elevage is almost entirely in concrete with the exception of the old barrique for the “Reserve”. Vinification is more in line with Burgundy (like J.P. Brun) than what is ‘normal’ in Beaujolais (whole cluster ferments with manual cap immersion) resulting in wines of not only finesse but also sneaky power and amazing longevity in the cellar.
We have personally been drinking many 2007 (‘difficult’ vintage) Cotes du Py’s from Jean-Marc over the last 2 years and we are continually blown away by their youthfulness, freshness and serious chuggability.
There are few 10 years+ wines under $30.00 that exist in this market anymore. Especially ones that can provide immense pleasure and complexity from year 2 to year 10+.
These are serious, honest wines from under-the-radar humble people. With their growing reputation, we are not sure they will be under the radar for long but we are darn sure they will remain humble. Our kinda’ folks and we’re very proud to be able to bring them to you.
Jean-Marc’s reputation continues to skyrocket and he is more often now considered and applauded as one of the ‘blue chip’ Beaujolais producers with extremely accessible prices. We are extremely happy his efforts and abilities are being recognized on a global scale.
