Francesco Cirelli is a rising star in Abruzzo. We first met him in the spring of 2012 on his farm in the foothills of Abruzzo near Pescara and we were blown away. Here is a farmer and winemaker who is ready to challenge conventions and push the boundaries.
After various high-profile jobs in the wine business, Francesco decided a few years ago it was time to make wine and he started looking for a farm. He chose to locate in Abruzzo because his roots are there and he fell in love with Agricola Cirelli the first time he saw it. He now runs a well-rounded farm with vineyards, olive trees, garlic, spelt, wheat, barley, figs and geese.
But for us, it is his wines that are special. In particular, his wines vinified in Anfora. As far as we know, he is the first vintner in Abruzzo to vinify in Anfora and he is not just using any old Anfora – he designed his own and had them custom built in Tuscany. These Anfora have special stainless steel seals on the top of them that assist in preventing oxidation and allow his wines to remain fresh and vibrant while still benefitting from the neutral vinification of the Anfora. Francesco’s white Trebbiano and his Cerasuolo are special – bright, fresh, refreshingly acidic Anfora wines.
