ENVÍNATE! AKA – wine yourself!

Envinate - wine yourself

Envínate (aka ‘wine-yourself’) is a project born in 2008 from the friendship of four oenology graduates – Roberto Santana, Alfonso Torrente, Laura Ramos and Jose Martinez. Each member contributes their own unique strengths to the collective goal: to express the distinctive terroirs of Spain and its Atlantic coastline regions. From the slate & schist vineyards of Ribeira Sacra (Galicia), the volcanic soils of Tenerife (Canary Islands) to the chalky soils of Almansa (Castilla-LaMancha).

They own a number of vineyards but also rent or have contracts with others and focus on indigenous, old-vine varieties: Mencía, Alicante Bouschet, Negramol, Mostcatel Negra, Listan Negro, Listan Gacho, Marmajuelo, Malvasia, Listan Blanco, Gual y Forastera, Albillo, Vijariego Negro, Moravia Agria, Garnacha Tintorera, Tinta Amarela.

Each area has a separate winery that follows identical winemaking practices: hand harvesting, wild yeast fermentation, neutral oak or concrete vessels and only minimal sulphur at bottling when absolutely necessary. The end results are some of the most exciting, real wines coming out of Spain today albeit in small quantities.

Our small allocation of wine from Envinate has just arrived (this collaboration began back in 2018). We managed to secure a small allocation of Albahra, which means ‘small sea’ in Castilian. Albahra is named after the vineyard area in Almansa, near the town of Albacete in southeastern Castilla-La Mancha. A blend of Garnacha Tintorera – a red juice grape – and Moravia Agria, a grape used for blending for which there is only approximately 50 hectares left in Spain.

Each grape variety is vinified separately. The Garnacha Tintorera sees up to 10 days maceration with 30-50% stems, then left on fine lees in concrete for 8 months.. The Moravia Agria is destemmed, sees 7 days maceration then is pressed and aged on fine lees in used French barriques for 8 months with no battonage. The wine is then blended and bottled unfined and unfiltered.
