Els Vinyerons is a partnership between two friends – Amós Bañeres Merinero & Alex Ruiz Masachs. Amos left his career as a pharmacist in Barcelona to partner with Alex, already famous for his Cava’s through his work as oenologist supervising the winemaking at his family’s winery, Cavas Masachs.
The focus here for Amos and Alex has always been to make still wines from Penedès (principally Cava terroir) with as little intervention as possible, from local varieties – Xarel-lo, Macabeu, Parellada and some Garnatxa and Tempranillo – with the philosophy that wines are first and foremost made in the vineyard and should represent that terroir – each wine with it’s own character of the small plot that it comes from.
The vineyard soil is a variety of limestone, calcareous clay and sand. They only use indigenous yeasts, no herbicides, pesticides or any oenologic products; no filtration or stabilization or sulphites, using amphoras and old barrels. Production is very, very, small scale – only one 228 Litre barrel is pressed per day.
The wines – Luerna (Firefly), Predegau (Praying Mantis), Saltamarti (Grasshopper) – are named in tribute to the insects that inhabit the vineyards, as a symbol of a healthy and well-balanced ecosystem; proof of the direction of their philosophy: letting the wine go it’s own way.
