“beautiful or delightful in such a way as to seem removed from everyday life.”
That’s Antonio Galloni’s verdict on Le Piane’s 2011 Boca. Galloni’s given it 96 pts and we couldn’t be happier to let everyone know about it. This full and expressive wine of 85% Nebbiolo and 15% Vespolina, was finally bottled last year – 4 years after the favourable harvest of 2011.
Le Piane feels that it’s “…one of our best examples of Boca with rich and ripe aromas from berries, tobacco, dark notes of forest, very balsamic and very rich but not lacking great elegance and fine character.”
Some highlights of Galloni’s tasting notes:
“…simply dazzling. Rich, translucent and remarkably vivid……sweet red cherry, rose petal, chalk, blood orange and mint are front and centre, but it is the wine’s superb textural polish that elevates it among the great wines of Italy…….bold and pungent flavours….striking depth to the fruit that ensures the savoury notes aren’t overpowering. …simply a magical bottle….” A. Galloni, April 2016
Le Piane’s 2011 “Mimmo”, dedicated to a friend who collaborated with them for many years, improving quality standards in the vineyards, is a blend of Nebbiolo, Vespolina and riper Croatina grapes after aging for 2 years in large barrels.
“….quite deep in the glass…sweet tobacco, mint, dried cherry, smoke……considerable appeal today and the structure to age…” A. Galloni August 2015
Le Piane’s 2014 Maggiorina, a lighter wine produced from a variety of grapes grown in old “Maggiorina” vineyards – Nebbiolo, Croatina, Vespolino – also received praise:
“…floral, mid-weight and bright, the Maggiorina captures the essence of Alto Piemonte……sweet red cherry, tobacco, mint, pine, crushed flowers…….a delicate, lithe, high acid red.” A. Galloni, April 2016
